Peru Sets an Example for Latin America's Indigenous Communities

A new law recognizing the land ownership rights of Peru's native inhabitants sets an important regional model. This new law should help to shun a repeat of the brutal scenes in Bagua in 2009. Peru's new law on the right of native people to prior discussion may set a regional example in avoiding long legal battles in the prevention and decrease of social conflicts.
The bill was signed in the town of Imacita, in Bagua province. Foreign investment in original land was needed for Peru's economic growth.
The Inter-American Court of Human Rights admired Peru for finally acting in accordance with its international responsibility and catching up with the rest of the area. Across the continent, indigenous people, governments and firms similar will be examining how Peru fares.
